1. Art classes like painting and drawing are important to students’ development and should be made compulsory in high school. To what extent do you agree or disagree? (2017/1/7)
2. Some people think any government money spent in supporting the artists such as painters, musicians and poets should be spent on more important things. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
3. Some people think that arts (such as painting and music) do not directly improve people's life, so government should spend money on other areas. Do you agree or disagree? (2018/5/12)
4. Some people claim that public museums and art galleries will be not be needed because people can see historical objects and works of art by using a computer. Do you agree or disagree with this opinion?
Over the past two hundred years, the huge progress achieved in science and technology has significantly transformed our world, but it has never made artists such as painters, musicians, and writers unnecessary in our life. This is, in my view, because arts can give us a lot of things that science and technology cannot.
Science and technology improves our knowledge about the world by telling us what it is like, or can be like. It was Newton, for instance, who told us why objects move and stop moving, and Einstein who told us that time is the fourth dimension of space. However, science and technology cannot tell us about ourselves, or why and how we should live in the world. And this is exactly where arts cut in.
As science and technology can influence our life on the outside, arts can move us on the inside. Through imagination, a painting, poem or novel can take us to the depths of our heart and make us understand the true meaning of our existence. Anyone who has ever read Ernest Hemingway’s Farewell to Arms will be struck by the cruelty of war and the value of loving and being loved, and those who have been inspired by Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony will never give up even in times of adversity.
Furthermore, arts can lead us outwardly to the vast world, real or imaginary, which provides us with opportunities to understand our responsibilities for the world as a whole. For example, the movie Schindler's List tells us that we, as human beings, should love, rather than hating each other, and the novel Silent Spring gives us a warning that the Earth will be destroyed if we go on polluting it the way we do now.
In summary, though the advanced science and technology today has blessed us with a prosperous material life, we should never dispense with arts that reveal the meaning and value of that life.
